GPS system sends tow truck quickly to vehicle breakdown site

November 2007: When a car breaks down in Australia, a tow truck is usually on its way almost immediately, after the motorist has contacted the towing operator.

Nationwide Towing, a leading tow operator, has implemented a computerised mapping and vehicle location system for its fleet, which consists of 90 trucks. The new system makes use of InfoWave’s Waveon 728 Mobile Data Terminal to monitor, dispatch, and manage its fleet; and in the process, allow the tow truck dispatchers to respond to calls for towing services quickly and efficiently.

The basic technology of Waveon 728 takes the guesswork out of locating the tow trucks by using GPS to determine the precise location of each truck and dispatching the nearest available truck to the customer.

Knowing the location of its trucks has helped Nationwide Towing better manage its fleet and customer expectations at the same time. While the customer is on the phone, the customer service personnel can locate the nearest truck in the area, and inform the customer accurately when to expect service.

Waveon 728 has effectively helped to save precious time that the dispatcher does not have and eliminates the need for additional customer service personnel to be hired to handle large call volumes.

Waveon 728 enables two-way communication (voice and data) between Nationwide Towing’s customer service center and its trucks. The customer service center is able to send assignments wirelessly via GPRS to the truck, which will be displayed on the truck’s large screen MDT. The truck can in turn acknowledge or respond to the assignment by tapping the MDT’s sensitive touch screen. The touch screen’s quick response has helped to improve the towing company’s service accuracy while reducing its administration time.

With Waveon 728, Nationwide Towing is now able to locate its trucks and assign the nearest, available one to its customer quickly and efficiently, which in turn improves its customer satisfaction.
