GT&T - RFID at its best |

When GT&T started 3 years ago, the small company of five people focused on fleet management hardware and applications. After 3 years of expansion, GT&T now has more than 40 staff members with regional offices covering China, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Australia. It wasn’t long before they realized that with their respective technology backgrounds and prime location in Singapore, there was a virtually untapped market for active RFID in their own backyard. "We saw an opportunity for active RFID, which very few companies were making in Asia at that time," CEO Cheng Gan said. "We were one of the first in the region to start manufacturing that technology, and we’re still the most affordable." They pursued the technology, and before long GT&T became one of the first low power, ultra-high frequency active RFID tag manufacturers in the region. GT&T is among the first in the world to integrate fleet tracking with active RFID personnel and asset tracking solutions, creating an end-to-end management system. Now the company has several solutions for fleet tracking and active RFID. Asset and personnel tracking systems use GT&T’s customized active RFID GTags and software to secure warehouses, offices, and automobile lots. In the case of the latter, GT&T teamed with Rhizone in the United States to implement Intellot, an intelligent vehicle tracking system that used GT&T’s GConnect active RFID products. By equipping vehicles with long-range, UHF active RFID tags and installing RFID readers at key places in the delivery circuit, the automobile lot logistics manager could track, trace and locate vehicles without having to enter the field. Automatic reports were e-mailed to the end user to notify when cars left and returned to the lot. "GConnect, integrated with Intellot, brings expertise together to solve an old problem and bring new value-added services," says Jeff Braid, President of Rhizone. "It is easy to deploy and leverages know-how of the automobile industry, web application development, remote monitoring, and wireless technology. GConnect is the only wireless technology that offers the flexibility to meet all the requirements for vehicle monitoring." GT&T’s unique advantage is that their GPS black box, called GBox and their RFID readers can easily communicate, meaning that the control center can track both the vehicle and the assets within, all in real time. GT&T conducted a pilot project with ECS iDA to use their RFID/GPS combination to track warehouse goods. Tags were affixed to products that were then tracked within the warehouse using active readers. Once the goods left the warehouse, the vehicles were tracked with the GPS GFleet system. This version of the GFleet solution enabled the user to have total visibility of the warehouse goods, from manufacturing to delivery. In situations such as cold chain management, the GConnect solution is especially useful. Information about the temperature of perishable products en route to their destination is transmitted via active RFID, from tags in containers to an in-vehicle reader. The reader communicates with the GBox, which transmits the information to the end user. Fluctuations in temperature that can ruin perishable items can be observed immediately, and steps can be taken to correct the issue before it becomes a problem. With the spectacular rate of company growth and the expansive potential of their technology, this once small company is poised to become a major player in the active RFID industry.
